Welcome to my monthly options update!
Here, I shall write monthly options update articles to keep track of options trades in my portfolio. Each options update serves as a status report on the open options and the obligations I have. A running tally of all my options trades and income to date are found on the Options page.
Assigned Options
I got assigned one option this month, somewhat unexpected, as the stock dropped 10%:
Trade #35: Sold 1 LKQ put option strike 27.5 exp 5/17/19 for $203.91 income: stock closed at 27.10 at expiration, 40 cents below my put strike, so I got assigned. Implied loss from assignment: $40. Net secured income: $163.91.

Expired Options
One option expired this month:
Trade #39: Sold 1 SRCL put option strike 45 exp 5/17/19 for $398.91 income: stock closed at 48.34 out of the money 7.42% from strike.
Trade #39: Sold 1 SRCL put option strike 45 exp 5/17/19 for $398.91 income: stock closed at 48.34 out of the money 7.42% from strike.
Closed Options
When an out of the money option goes further out of the money, one may close the option early and secure most of the options income.
I did not close any options this month.
Rolled Options
An option can be rolled forward by buying back an option and selling another option with a later expiration date. Rolling is done to avoid options assignment for in the money options.
I did not roll any options this month.
I did not sell any call options this month.
I sold 4 puts this month:
Trade #44: Sold 1 BIDU put option strike 115 exp 9/20/19 for $923.89 income on 5/28/19, when the stock dropped down 16% after lowering outlook. I wanted to harvest some tax losses and sold some puts before doing so.
Trade #45: Sold 1 BIDU put option strike 110 exp 12/20/19 for $973.18 income on 5/28/19: same reasoning as above.
Trade #46: Sold 1 BIDU put option strike 110 exp 12/20/19 for $999.18 income on 5/29/19: same reasoning as above.
Trade #47: Sold 1 CPRI put option strike 30 exp 10/18/19 for $148.90 income on 5/29/19: stock traded down 10% so I took the opportunity to commit to buy the stock at 30 for some income.
I bought one call option this month:
Trade #43: Bought 1 BIDU call option strike 140 exp 7/19/19 paying $245.79 premium on 5/28/19: stock traded down 10% and I figure if it bounced back in 2 month I would at least breakeven and potentially make many times my premium. I used to think 140 was a bargain price to pay for BIDU.
New Call Options Sold
Selling calls is a way to earn premiums from time decay on securities that are unlikely to reach a certain strike price within a certain time frame. This is best done on stocks you already own so as to limit liabilities should the underlying security shoot to the moon.
I did not sell any call options this month.
New Put Options Sold
Selling put options is a way to earn premium for agreeing to buy a stock at a given price for a period of time. This is best done with high quality, buy and hold stocks that have limited downside.

New Call Options Bought
Buying call options is a speculative play with asymmetric payoff: most of the time you lose small but on rare occasions you could win big.
Options Expiring Next Month
Two options will expire in June:
Trade #30: Sold 1 SQQQ call option strike 13 exp 6/21/19 for $268.91 income: current split adjusted price 11.11 out of the money 14.54% from strike. Assignment is somewhat unlikely, unless the downtrend in stocks continues.
Trade #44: Bought 1 PCG put option strike 9 exp 6/21/19 paying $285.33 premium: current price 17.10 out of the money 90.00% from strike. Assignment is extremely unlikely. This will almost assuredly expire worthless, though I did make $313.43 from a call option I bought on PCG to make up for the loss.
