Net worth: Bottom line up front, my net worth decreased by $292,253.56, down 6.58% this month. Tax-deferred accounts (all in TQQQ) fell $146,961.73 (-19.74%) — the largest single drag — while taxable stocks fell $117,260.00 (-3.32%) on marked-to-market losses and my Roth IRA fell $24,092.73 (-8.05%). Gold pulled back $3,092.28 (-6.90%), the home Zestimate eased $500 (-0.53%), and cash dipped $346.82. Liabilities were unchanged. The S&P 500 fell 0.93% in October, closing at 7,580.07.

Liquid net worth stands at $3,456,858.38, or 83.29% of net worth. My net worth is now 547.51 times the S&P 500 index — the multiple I track to keep myself honest against the market.

October was a red month in a year that is still solidly green. The damage was concentrated in the investment rows — taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth all fell — while cash, bonds, and the 529 barely moved. No leverage, no change in liabilities, savings rate intact. Onward.

Portfolio Update October 2026: Bought 9 Stocks for $4,019.79, Sold 2 for $2,739.88, Net Inflow $1,279.91

The time has come for my monthly portfolio update. At the end of every month, I will update my portfolio and comment on any changes. I do that for accountability and also so you may glean some ideas on how I allocate my capital. As in September, this month's update closes with a performance review in the style of a fund manager's letter, so you can see not just what I bought and sold, but what drove the month's result.

Transactions

In October I bought 9 stocks for $4,019.79 and sold 2 for $2,739.88, for a net inflow of $1,279.91.

The month was dominated by a quick IPO round trip. On October 9 I took a 100-share allocation of TRex Bio (TRXB) at the $14 IPO price ($1,400) in my Roth IRA — the biotech priced at the low end of its $14–$16 range that Thursday night — funded by selling 17.264 shares of TQQQ for $1,399.91. Three weeks later, on October 30, I sold the TRXB at $13.40 ($1,339.97) — it was not performing well, and TQQQ was low — and rolled the proceeds straight back into 21.199 TQQQ shares at $63.21, well below the $81.09 at which I had sold. The failed IPO fling cost me about $60, but the round trip left me with 3.935 more TQQQ shares than I started with (12,479.41 to 12,483.34).

October also brought one new position: 16 shares of Vaxcyte (PCVX), a clinical-stage vaccine maker, for $960.33 on October 26 — three weeks after its positive OPUS-1 pneumococcal-vaccine trial readout.

The remainder was dividend reinvestments and small automatic purchases: NVR ($101.19), YORW ($132.00), VMI ($84.20), PEG ($1.34), OMC ($0.44), and UNP ($0.40).

Performance Review

For the month, the portfolio fell 6.56%, from $4,590,457.13 to $4,289,219.32 — well behind the S&P 500's 0.93% decline.

October was a month of two markets. The S&P 500 set a new all-time high early in the month, then slid for three weeks to finish down 0.93% — its second straight monthly decline, though still up about 11.7% on the year. Under the surface, the damage was narrow and pointed squarely at mega-cap technology: 72% of the index's constituents actually rose, the equal-weight index gained 4.9%, and the Nasdaq — home of the big AI names — fell 6.7%. Investors spent the month questioning the returns on the AI infrastructure build-out, and the month's worst session came on October 30, when hawkish post-blackout guidance from Fed officials — Lorie Logan floated at least two more rate hikes — knocked the index down 1.8% in a single day. (Month-end prices below are from the October 30 close; the 31st was a Saturday.)

Against this backdrop, the portfolio's technology-heavy top end did the damage. TQQQ, the largest holding at about 18%, fell 20.19% — roughly $195,600 of the month's $301,238 decline on its own. The AI mega-caps all lagged: Meta fell 15.63%, GOOGL 17.21%, Nvidia 11.25%, Amazon 2.92%, Broadcom 6.24%. These were among the market's weakest big names in October as the AI-spending question hung over earnings season. Software joined the selloff: F5 fell 24.44%, ServiceNow 22.90%, Cloudflare 19.72%.

These losses were partly cushioned by the defensive and non-tech side of the book — the stocks the cap-weighted index was missing. AutoZone was the top dollar contributor, rising 13.95% (about +$19,055); AutoNation added 9.44% (about +$17,597). Healthcare held up: Edwards Lifesciences gained about $10,209, Mettler-Toledo about $8,411. S&P Global jumped 19.14% (about +$8,020), Ulta 17.50% (about +$5,160), Berkshire Hathaway about $5,779, and smaller winners included Churchill Downs (+26.73%) and Regeneron (+27.47%).

Notable changes in positioning: the TRXB round trip described above, which converted a failed IPO fling into 3.935 extra TQQQ shares at a lower price; and the new 16-share Vaxcyte position. The Fair Isaac position built across September's selloff, meanwhile, gained 7.86% in October ($659.43 to $711.23), recouping part of the slide that created the entry — though at $711.23 it remains about 2% below my $728.05 cost.
